The history of the obelisk traces back thousands of years to Egyptian pagan worship. It was a phallic symbol which honored the sun god and fertility. Many pagan symbols were merged with the Roman Catholic Church in the fourth century. The tower was used as a watchtower, for bells to be heard, to ward off evil spirits, and to symbolize reaching the heavens. It became part of church architecture and identified a building as a place of worship.
