Created Unto Good Works

Of what value are good works if they do not save us?

Ephesians 2:8-9 is a very important scripture and often quoted. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Salvation is a divine work of God in the heart of man and is neither deserved nor earned. This is a wonderful truth but many neglect verse 10 which follows. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”Read more

Concerning Communion

How often should the ordinance of the Lord’s supper be observed?

The church is clearly instructed to observe this ordinance. People who are unwilling to participate have spiritual needs which they need to address with the Lord.

Jesus did not tell the church how frequently they were to participate in communion. He said, “For as often as ye eat this bread and drink this cup…” (1 Corinthians 11:26). Frequency is an issue that is left to each person and fellowship to decide. It is noteworthy that Christ patterned this ordinance after the Passover which was celebrated once a year.Read more

The Observance of Feet Washing

How often should the ordinance of feet washing be observed?

Jesus taught the disciples in John 13 that they should follow His example and do as He had done to them. Jesus gave no guidelines as to how often the ordinance should be observed. An ordinance, by its very nature, is symbolic of something spiritual. If it were observed daily, weekly, or possibly even monthly, it might begin to lose its significance and become a ritualistic practice.

Many of the saints have a special ordinance service during an annual meeting. Some congregations have a practice of washing the saints’ feet around the time of year that Jesus celebrated the Passover.Read more

Baptism

Can people go to Heaven if they have not been baptized?

“Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3). People will go to Heaven who have been born again and saved by the grace of God. We are not saved by works or by outward observances but by faith (Ephesians 2:8-9). Therefore, we are not saved by the physical act of baptism. There will be people in Heaven who have not been baptized by water, but they will have been forgiven of their sins by the blood of Jesus. Read more

Speaking in Tongues

If I have spoken in tongues with unintelligible speech, does this mean I am not saved? What should I do?

It is not a curse to have the light of truth shine on our lives. Rather, as we accept truth, we find greater freedom and victory in the Holy Spirit. As with any false doctrine, there can be innocent people who get entangled because they lack understanding of God’s Word. The enemy is crafty and has ensnared many with this deceptive practice.Read more
