Definitions of Hell

Scripture: Acts 2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. (Parallel scripture: Psalm 16:10).

Hell‘ in this passage is translated from the Hebrew word ‘Sheol‘ and from the Greek word ‘Hades‘. These words mean: the grave, the state of the dead, or the place of departed souls.

When Jesus died on the cross he did not go to the devil’s hell. His soul ascended to paradise–a place of pleasure and delight.

Jesus told the thief on the cross, “Today shalt thou be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43).
